Preston Community Food Pantry seeks space and utilities changes as freezer fails

George Young, president of the Preston Community Food Pantry, and volunteer Joel Krieger presented a plan to expand pantry space and services, including a larger freezer and refrigeration area, a bathroom, and small office space. Young said the expansion would increase freezer and refrigerator capacity roughly fourfold to accommodate overflow donations and better protect perishable goods.
Young told council that existing freezer side panels have bowed and the pantry plans to give away frozen food and temporarily shut the freezer to prevent further damage. He asked whether the city would permit an expanded footprint, a higher roofline to allow a taller freezer, connections for water and sewer (noting the building’s current water has no meter and is paid by the city), and whether the pantry could tie into a gas line the city currently pays for. Council members asked about funding, bond requirements and lease terms; the mayor will review the requests and staff will follow up on site footprint, utilities and lease issues.
