Council approves $299,021 telematics system for public-works fleet

The Fort Wayne Common Council voted to approve a multi-year purchase of Samsara telematics software and equipment for the public-works fleet, authorizing $299,021.20 for years two and three of the service.
Todd Brookmeyer, Director of Fleet, told council members the city had used Samsara for one year with "extremely great results," citing uses such as accident review, driver coaching for cell-phone use and seat-belt compliance, and a recent program to monitor idling time. He said the system covers approximately 3,254 plated assets and about 125 asset tags on skid steers and trailers, and estimated that on review the technology has exonerated employees in roughly 40% of accident cases. A committee do-pass recommendation was recorded and the council approved the ordinance by unanimous roll call.
