Story County Board advances proposed property tax levy after brief hearing

The Story County Board of Supervisors on March 31 held the required initial public hearing on the county—s proposed property tax levy and voted to proceed with the levy as published.
Assistant Auditor Lisa Markley told the board that the statutory notice had been published and the countywide mailing required for the hearing was sent on time. "The mailing cost the County $18,000.00," Markley said, and she cautioned that the combined statement, which includes proposed levies from the county, school districts and, where applicable, cities, "may confuse property owners" because some levies are not part of that single statement. The board opened the hearing at 9:12 a.m.; Supervisor Linda Murken read an email from Dr. Kay Ann Taylor of Ames opposing the proposed property taxes and then closed the hearing at 9:16 a.m.
After the public comment period, Supervisor Latifah Faisal moved and Supervisor Linda Murken seconded a motion "to proceed with the Proposed Property Tax Levy as published." The motion carried on a roll call vote; the transcript records the outcome as "motion carried unanimously (MCU)." The vote begins the formal budget-adoption process for the next fiscal year. A resolution implementing the levy will be effective upon signature and, according to the meeting record, can be inspected Monday—Friday, 8:00 a.m.—4:30 p.m., at 900 6th Street in Nevada.
The board also adopted the meeting agenda at the start of the session and adjourned at 9:17 a.m. The meeting record notes that Supervisor Lisa Heddens was absent.
