Fairfield ramps up summer meal distribution after demand outpaces supply

Assistant Superintendent Monica Kegerreis told the school board the district has repeatedly increased weekly summer meal allocations this month after families requested more food.
"All the meals were distributed, and there were still quite a few students needing meals," Kegerreis said, describing a sequence of increases: last year's highest weekly distribution was 171 meals, this year's first week was set at 200 (which ran out in about 45 minutes), the next week was increased to 450 (distributed by about 1:30 p.m. with 35 students still needing meals), and the district plans to provide 500 meals next week. Each distribution provides five breakfasts and five lunches per child and will continue Thursdays through July 16.
The report was delivered as part of the Assistant Superintendent's presentation and was not accompanied by a formal motion. District staff moved the site from Millersburg Elementary School to New Paris Elementary School this year to manage higher demand. School leaders said the larger allocations reflect local need and that the program is drawing families across the district.
