The Smyth County Board of Supervisors on June 11 scheduled multiple public hearings and approved a committee recommendation on courthouse HVAC replacement.
The budget committee recommended and the board scheduled a public hearing for Budget Amendment No. 7, totaling $5,002,000, on June 18 at 5 p.m.; the packet showed $2,000 of that amount as a grant for a junior-attorney program and the remaining request related to school-board revenue/expenditure adjustments and ESSER funds. Separately, supervisors agreed to send proposed real-estate and personal-property tax billing schedule changes to the ordinance committee and to schedule public hearings: the ordinance committee recommended a July 9 public hearing on several ordinance matters and July 26 for the billing schedule change that would shift personal-property due dates to Oct. 5 and split real-estate into June/Dec payments beginning in 2027.
On facilities, the Buildings & Grounds committee reported two courthouse HVAC units were beyond repair and recommended accepting Trane's proposal. The board approved the committee recommendation to proceed with the Trane contract in the amount of $1,001,244, pending the procurement consultant's final approval of specifications and authorizing County Administrator Sean Hutt to execute contract documents on the county's behalf.
