Smyth County officials commend officers for crash analysis, life‑saving and drug recovery

Commonwealth's Attorney Bucky Blevins recognized four law-enforcement officers at the Smyth County Board of Supervisors meeting on June 11 for work the office said strengthened prosecutions and saved lives.
Blevins read a certificate honoring 1st Sergeant Jeff Jones of the Virginia State Police for interpreting vehicle event-data recordings that aided the prosecution of a crash from Aug. 29, 2024. He also commended Deputy Dane King of the Smyth County Sheriff's Office for rendering life-saving aid on May 24, 2026, stating that King “immediately applied a KAT tourniquet successfully stopping the bleeding” and kept the injured man awake until EMS arrived.
Blevins additionally read citations for Sergeant April Morgan and Deputy Adam Boardwine related to an arrest on Jan. 26, 2024, in which officers recovered more than 40 grams of methamphetamine concealed on a detainee. Blevins said the seizure contributed to a conviction; the transcript records the defendant, Andrea Barr, was sentenced to 10 years in the penitentiary.
“The distinctive accomplishments … reflect the highest standards of the Virginia State Police,” Blevins said while reading the citations. The board and meeting attendees applauded the officers, and the chair thanked them for their service.
