UN and partners step up Somalia preparedness as WFP warns El Niño risks widening hunger

Farhan said OCHA and national authorities in Somalia are increasing preparedness ahead of an anticipated El Niño season between October and December, with forecasts indicating a high probability the pattern will persist and raise flood risk. He said partners are supporting contingency planning, risk analysis and coordination at national and state levels to strengthen readiness after 2023 lessons when floods and drought displaced 2,300,000 people.
Separately, the spokesperson relayed WFP analysis that "El Nino could push at least 49000000 more people into acute food insecurity by the end of 2027." He said WFP is working with FAO, OCHA and other partners on anticipatory action plans in more than 50 countries to help governments prepare and reduce risk.
