Utility General Manager Jeff Shanahan told the council that the city began deploying AMI meters in November and has installed roughly 4,000 units so far, representing about 25% of the system’s 16,000 meters. Shanahan asked the council to authorize purchase of additional electric meters for $782,351.90 to continue the buildout.
"We're planning on...we'll get about another 4,000 put in 4 to 6 months," Shanahan said, adding the AMI network increases safety, allows remote disconnects and improves service turnaround times. Council approved the resolution to sign the quote and issue a purchase order; staff said they will return in six months to request the final phase purchase.
