Board hears surprising Healthy Kids survey result: higher-AP students not uniformly more stressed

During the LCAP midyear presentation, Assistant Superintendent Ariel Dolowich highlighted analysis from the California Healthy Kids survey that compared student well-being to advanced-course enrollment.
Dolowich noted that, "the more APs and honors didn't necessarily, make them feel increasingly more pressured, than say students that took 2 APs or honors." He pointed out an outlier group (nine students taking six APs/honors) but said the general pattern showed some students taking multiple advanced courses scored highly on measures of calm and coping.
Board members asked about survey honesty and response patterns; Dolowich said the presentation relies on last year’s data and that the district triangulates survey responses with observations and counselor feedback. Trustees requested more depth on how responses were generated and how the district will interpret that alongside counselors' insights.
