Bridge replacement in Piedmont Park to start Feb. 10; major excavation and crane installation planned

Nancy and Daniel described the Piedmont Park bridge replacement schedule and construction methods. The plan calls for removal of the existing wood bridge, chipping down of the existing abutments, pouring new abutments and then using a crane to lift the prefabricated bridge into place in a one-day operation at the end of the primary construction sequence.
Daniel said much of the work is excavation, drilling foundations and pouring concrete and estimated a roughly four-week schedule for the main construction, followed by concrete curing before the bridge installation. Staff warned that contractor vehicles will use the Witter Field parking lot entrance and that signage and barricades will be posted; they asked park users to follow detours. Commissioners requested improved public notice and careful vehicle-parking management to keep the park usable for visitors during construction.
