DRB debates shade-tree species for wastewater treatment facility

The board reviewed staff comments about the proposed shade-tree species and size on the Bartlett Bay site plan. Marissa, representing Hoyle Tanner, said the city's arborist, Nick Gardy, recommended the Eastern redbud for its canopy and the species' underrepresentation in South Burlington and noted it reaches 20–25 feet.
Several board members questioned whether the single parking-lot tree labeled as Eastern redbud meets the intent for a 'major deciduous shade tree' and asked whether one or two parking-lot trees could be replaced with larger species. The applicant offered alternatives the arborist suggested, including Kentucky coffee tree, northern catalpa, Turkish filbert, and American sycamore, and agreed to provide options depending on availability. The board asked the applicant to show revised planting plans to clarify species, size at planting, and locations.
