Board updates code of conduct to incorporate city alcohol restriction; motion passes

The governance committee brought forward edits to the library code of conduct to reflect a city action on alcohol in public buildings. Committee members explained the city enacted a policy on Sept. 15 that limits alcohol in public spaces; one committee member said the city action “abolishes the use of alcohol in all public building,” while another noted an exemption for events that serve a legitimate public cultural purpose. The board voted to incorporate the change into the code of conduct and the motion passed by voice vote.

Committee discussion also covered patron items and signage: the committee recommended clarifying that the library is not responsible for patrons’ stored items (cubbies), and agreed to update signage and post the revised policy everywhere it is displayed. The governance chair will circulate the approved policy and staff will ensure the updated version is posted.
