Council approves street closures for Monmouth Hispanic Heritage Festival on Sept. 19

Jeannie Weber, an event organizer, told the council she was presenting on behalf of "Anne Tunnel 2" and outlined a reduced layout for the Hispanic Heritage Festival scheduled for Sept. 19 from 4 to 9 p.m. She said organizers want West Broadway and South Main closed for vendor booths and that a smaller stage will be set in front of the Buchanan Center for the Arts (BCA).
"The event is scheduled for September 19," Weber said, adding the shorter hours and smaller stage are intended to make the event more family friendly and easier to manage. She said volunteers from Abner's would operate a festival bar adjacent to the stage and that organizers would mark and protect landscaping and make ongoing safety announcements.
Council members and the police chief discussed which blocks to close and how to route traffic. The police chief recommended blocking multiple main roadways around the square to prevent through traffic. After discussion, the mayor called for a motion; council voted to approve the proposed layout and closures by roll call.
The approved plan reduces the footprint from past years, sets a 4–9 p.m. run time, and directs organizers and city staff to coordinate stage placement and traffic control to ensure public safety.
