Council adopts ordinance to convert donated 9-acre parcel into a park

Mapleton’s council unanimously approved an ordinance amending the general-plan land-use map and rezoning a donated 9-acre parcel from general commercial to parks/open space; staff said the donor conditioned the gift on park development and naming.
Staff member Sean told the council the city received a donation of a 9-acre parcel with the understanding the property be developed as a park and named for a donor relative. "They deeded us 9 acres of property, and the agreement at the time was that they would deed us the property in exchange we would develop it as a park and name it after 1 of their relatives," Sean said.
The council opened the public hearing, heard no public commenters, and moved to adopt the ordinance to update the general-plan future land-use map and rezone the parcel from general commercial to open space. Council member Egbert moved to adopt the ordinance and a second was recorded; the roll call vote was unanimous and the ordinance passed. Staff said the rezoning is intended to align zoning with the donor's park plan rather than allow commercial development on the parcel.
