Peekskill extends temporary closure of Esther Street through Dec. 31, 2025
Summary

Council voted to extend the existing temporary closure of Esther Street to vehicles through Dec. 31, 2025, allowing continued pedestrian-only use of the roadway. Councilman Fassett moved the resolution and it carried unanimously.
During public comment several residents and business owners urged that the council consider opening the street, citing traffic backup, safety and business impacts; others suggested keeping closures seasonally. The mayor said staff will speak with business owners and do further research before any consideration of permanent status. As one commenter put it, "I really think that street needs to be opened" citing traffic flow and accessibility concerns for downtown businesses.
The resolution is intended to maintain the status quo through the year while staff and council examine impacts and consult stakeholders.
