Makanda board approves $24,438 street-sealing plan, awards bid to Illini

The Village of Makanda Board of Trustees voted May 5 to approve the Street & Road Committee's annual maintenance plan and accept Illini's bid to perform the work, totaling $24,438.00. Trustee Hilliard presented the plan, which scales back some roads to a single coat of oil-and-chip this year because of rising oil prices.
"Due to rising oil prices, roads will be given a single coat of oil and chip," Trustee Hilliard said during the committee report. The board approved single-coat work on Poplar Camp (repair at the newly installed culvert), Oak Grove, Clay Creek, East McGuire and Midway, while Rowan Road and Wiley Lane (from Makanda Road to Water Tower Lane) will receive a double seal. President Tina Shingleton told the board that IDOT had approved the calculated amount of $24,438.00 and that Illini had bid on the work.
Trustee Wolff moved to approve the annual Street and Road Report and accept Illini's bid; Trustee Dalton seconded, and by voice vote "all present at roll call voted yes," the motion carried. The board also approved an entrance gate-to-gate single seal at the Buncombe Water District office; funding for the primary sealing work will come from the Motor Fuel Fund, while the Buncombe entrance will be paid from the General Fund.
The board heard additional crew-related items in the same report: a tree removal on Rowan Road performed April 24 cost $2,000, and an estimate of $1,650 was approved to remove two large limbs hanging over Rowan Road. The board did not request further bids during the meeting and directed work to proceed under the accepted bid and budget. The next step is scheduling the work with the contractor under the Motor Fuel Fund appropriation.
