FAA increases grant for Newton runway reconstruction; local share cut, work under way

The Harvey County commission heard an update Aug. 26 from Airport Manager Brian Palmer that the Federal Aviation Administration has increased its grant for the Runway 8-26 reconstruction project "about $400,000 more" than anticipated. Palmer said the additional federal funds lower the new local share to roughly $230,000, which will be split evenly between the City of Newton and Harvey County, and that construction work is already under way.
Palmer told commissioners the contractor plans to establish a concrete crushing facility on airport property in a location chosen "not near businesses that were impacted or affected by previous projects." The board received the report as information; no additional county appropriation was made at the meeting.
