The Carbondale board approved a posting for a Bilingual (Spanish) Teacher at Thomas School for the 2026–2027 school year after staff reported the school meets the Illinois School Code threshold that triggers the position once 20 or more students speak the same language.
Assistant Superintendent Michelle Martin presented the requirement and noted the teacher will provide native-language instruction to Spanish-speaking English language learners. The board also approved the Consolidated District Plan required by the Illinois State Board of Education for federal formula grants for fiscal year 2027; a copy of the plan was provided in the board packet for review.
Martin also reported assessment and screening activity: state testing was wrapping up at Thomas, Lewis and CMS; the STAR spring benchmark window opened and runs through May 8 with data to be shared at the June meeting; Pre-K screening is scheduled for May 7–8 and kindergarten registration/screening April 29–May 1.
