Teachers and supporters urge higher pay and better supports as district contract talks continue

She asked the board to use the district's fund balance constructively as negotiations proceed.
Second-grade teacher Jenny Winters, speaking in her 36th and final year in the classroom, described rising workload and behavioral challenges and warned that teaching is becoming unsustainable for many. "We are facing a crisis in education," she said, and argued a pay raise is more than a reward: "A pay raise is not merely a reward. It is investment in stability." Winters urged the board to offer a substantive proposal that addresses retention and health-care costs.
Others in the audience echoed the tension between supporting teachers and concerns about tax increases and school-choice. Board members acknowledged the speakers and noted public comment will feed into ongoing negotiations and discussions with the district's bargaining teams.
