Teachers, union representative and parents raise safety and behavior concerns to the board

Several speakers urged the Carbondale Elementary School District No. 95 board to address student behavior and safety concerns at the Nov. 13 meeting. Margaret Chambers spoke on behalf of CESPA president Leatreasa LillyMadison about student behaviors and safety conditions in the schools. Megan Batteau, speaking as a parent, teacher and graduate, related safety observations and concerns at the middle school.
Megan Tate, reporting for Faculty Council on behalf of Jennifer Burke, said staff have been discussing extreme behaviors for two months and reported incidents that have disrupted learning and caused staff injuries. "Teachers feel they are under pressure to have students show learning growth on state testing, but they are unable to until extreme behaviors are under control so teachers can teach," Tate said. Faculty representatives said current consequences do not match the severity of behaviors and invited board members to visit the buildings to observe conditions.
No formal policy action or disciplinary protocols were adopted at the Nov. 13 meeting; the minutes record the concerns raised and the board did not take a separate vote on disciplinary policy. Board members heard the reports as part of public comments and Faculty Council remarks and will consider next steps in future meetings.
