Board approves Classroom Curriculum & Student Furniture Fund to let curriculum dollars roll over

The Centennial School District 28J Governing Board unanimously approved a new Classroom Curriculum & Student Furniture Fund at its Jan. 8 meeting. Paul Southerton, the district’s director of business and operations, told the board the fund would allow unused annual allocations for curriculum materials and student furniture to roll over from year to year.
"This fund would enable unused annual allocations to roll over from year to year," Southerton said, explaining his recommendation to create the fund within the Special Funds category. He recommended allocating 1% of the district’s annual State School Fund formula grant and all revenue from the sale of surplus minor property to capitalize the fund beginning in the 2024–25 budget year. Board members asked clarifying questions about eligible uses and implementation timelines.
Director Melissa Standley moved to create the fund; Director Ronald "Jess" Hardin seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The board did not attach an immediate dollar amount beyond the funding sources Southerton recommended and asked administration to return implementation details during upcoming budget work sessions.
Next steps: staff will implement the fund structure and include it in the budget planning process for the 2025–26 school year. The board will review related policy language and any proposed allocation rules in a future meeting.
