Finance Director Mr. Wong told the Cascade SD 5 board that Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) administrators notified staff the district's PERS side account "will be discontinued in August," a timing earlier than earlier projections prepared by Piper had shown.
"During the May budget committee meeting, I presented that ... our side account is projected to run out completely sometime around February 2027," Mr. Wong said. "Earlier this month ... we received a notification from PERS that our district's side account ... will be discontinued in August, which means our site account has ran out sooner than Piper's projection." He said staff are calculating the dollar impact and are consulting with other districts and professional peers.
Board members and staff discussed immediate implications. The superintendent and finance staff noted that the earlier cutoff could mean paying additional months of PERS employer costs sooner than expected; one staff member characterized the extra cost as "over a $100,000 per month" relative to previous expectations. Members compared the district's situation with Baker School District (which the finance director said ran out earlier in the year) and noted larger systems such as Portland Public face substantially larger liabilities. Mr. Wong said the district will track budget-to-actual monthly and report updates to the board as numbers are finalized.
The board did not adopt any immediate fiscal measures at the meeting; Mr. Wong said staff will present more precise dollar amounts once calculations conclude and will bring options for consideration, including tighter budget controls and learning from districts farther along the process.
