The sheriff told the Jackson County Board that upgrading the county's Axon contract to an AI-assisted platform would consolidate body- and in-car-camera data, add virtual-reality training and enable a Fusus real-time crime center that participating entities could elect to join. He described the package as a five-year program with an estimated total near $1.4 million and an annual increase in cost of roughly $138,569 over the current plan.
The sheriff said the Axon system would markedly reduce staff time on records and FOIA work, improving customer service and reopening counter hours. "It'll go in there, and within 5 minutes, it's all done," he said when describing AI-assisted FOIA redaction and processing, arguing that what now takes two to three hours per video could be completed in minutes.
Commissioners asked about governance, monitoring, data provenance and whether schools and other private entities would be volunteers on the crime center. The sheriff said participation would be voluntary, that Axon would assist in outreach and that local pilot experience (Blackman Township) showed improved turnaround and prosecutor satisfaction. He emphasized that officers would review and sign AI-drafted reports and that the platform would timestamp edits and supervisory reviews.
The board did not vote on the sheriff's request at the study session; the sheriff said he did not expect approval that day and that the proposal would go through committee review and a future board meeting for potential action.
