The North Wasco County School District 21 board on Feb. 27 considered one-year cooperative agreements with Dufur School District to allow a small number of Dufur students to join The Dalles baseball and softball teams under OSAA rules. Principal Evans and TDHS Baseball Coach Pat Clark described roster-tracking procedures, academic eligibility checks (FinalForms), and argued the agreements would not displace The Dalles students.
Coach Pat Clark said: “The Dalles students will always come first and no student from The Dalles will lose a roster spot or playing time to a Dufur student under this cooperative agreement.” Board members questioned the availability of precise sign-up data, roster thresholds and documentation supporting team formation. Student representatives spoke in favor of more opportunities and larger teams; Student Rep Riley Elliott noted the school’s community events and student involvement and one student rep said she welcomed more players joining teams.
Motions to approve the cooperative agreement for boys baseball and the cooperative agreement for girls softball were each moved and seconded; both votes recorded Yes — Lopez, Richardson, Nelson; Abstained — Jones, Wynn-Elledge. Both motions were declared to have failed. Board attorney Jason Corey recommended returning both items to the March 13 agenda for additional documentation and review. No formal financial estimate was included beyond a statement that teams raise much of their own funds.
