Superintendent outlines plan to boost third-grade reading; coach to report in January

Superintendent Nicole Albisu told the board the district’s second long-term goal is to ensure students can read proficiently by the end of third grade. She described targeted interventions including IA reading groups, dedicated coaches at each school and frequent progress checks for students.
Albisu said staff are monitoring progress every six weeks and providing professional development to support instruction. "We hope to have Early Literacy Coach Christi Swan present updates in January 2026 at the Board Meeting," Albisu said. The superintendent also said the district uses formative assessments so students can "challenge themselves during their reading assessments" and to identify those who need additional support.
The board did not take action at the work session; Albisu said she will continue to report progress in the regular Superintendent Report at monthly board meetings.
