Royse City ISD to opt out of SB 401's homeschool-athletics provision, district warns of roster and liability issues

The Royse City ISD athletic department recommended that the district opt out of the SB 401 provision that would allow non-enrolled (homeschool) students to participate in district athletics. The presenter said eligibility, roster-building, insurance and daily-workout policing would create administrative and legal complexity for coaches and staff.
"These are a few of the schools... opting out," the presenter said when describing neighboring districts' approaches, and added the athletic department and administration "recommend...to opt out of the homeschool participation." The board moved and approved the policy update to opt out by voice vote (6–0).
