The Seaside School District 10 Board voted unanimously to run its next superintendent recruitment in-house and appointed a hiring committee to lead the process.
Board member Brian Taylor moved “I move to use an in-house recruitment and employment process to hire our next Superintendent,” and the motion carried 6–0. The board then nominated Katherine Davidson to lead the committee, with members Shannon, Sondra and Jason also named to participate.
Why it matters: The district is planning to fill the superintendent position this year, and board members discussed whether to promote from within or pursue a state- or national-level search. The board recorded several prior search materials and consultant proposals as attachments for consideration, but chose to rely on district-led staffing and procedures for this cycle.
During discussion, board members cited different past approaches: Member Brian Taylor recalled that a recruiter was used for the 2016 search, while Superintendent Penrod described being selected through an in-house process in 2019. Penrod also told the board she was “willing to work past August 30, if the Board would like her to.”
The board’s motions were unanimous. Voting detail for the hiring-process motion was recorded as: Katherine Davidson: Yea; Sondra Gomez: Yea; Jason Haag: Yea; Chuck Mattocks: Yea; Shannon Swedenborg: Yea; Brian Taylor: Yea (Yea: 6, Nay: 0).
Next steps: The committee lead will begin developing the recruitment timeline and criteria using the board’s stated priorities of transparency and staff involvement. The board noted several consultant proposals on file but did not select an outside firm at this meeting.
