Ontario SD 8C approves four policies on second reading, advances three on first reading
Summary
The Board unanimously approved second readings of policies LBEA, CEA, JHCA and JOA and advanced policies IF, BHD and BBFA on first reading after discussion of a possible stipend provision; Board Attorney Wyatt Baum noted the Oregon Ethics Commission's concerns about stipends. The Board voted to approve on second reading four policies: LBEA, CEA, JHCA and JOA. Director Jenna Mejia moved to approve the second readings, Director Lisa Reeser seconded, and Vice-Chair Abby Apodaca, Director Mejia and Director Reeser each recorded a yes vote. No additional questions were raised during the second-reading motion.
The Board also held a first reading of policies IF, BHD and BBFA. Director Reeser asked specifically about a provision that could allow stipends for Board members. Board Attorney Wyatt Baum explained the cautionary context, saying, “if the Board does approve this policy tonight, it would just pass it on to the next School Board that joins in the coming years,” and that guidance from the Oregon Ethics Commission could change. Director Reeser moved to approve the first reading and the motion passed with the same three yes votes recorded.
