Choir performance, awards and school updates highlight board meeting

The board meeting opened with a performance by The Dalles High School Choir, directed by Mic Kelly, followed by staff and community recognitions. Communications Director Stephanie Bowen recognized Leah Ferguson for receiving the Oregon ACTE New Teacher of the Year Award, and Superintendent Bernal thanked Les Schwab Tires and Bishop Sanitation for donations to the Hawk Nest media booth at Wahtonka Campus.
Student representatives and building reporters shared numerous school highlights: Colonel Wright students reported that five students advanced in the Oregon Battle of the Books and that the Family Math and Literacy Night drew over 200 attendees; the school also received a new Gaga Ball pit through a district grant. Chenowith reported a $10,000 donation to its Booster Club and ongoing fundraisers. Dry Hollow's Jog-A-Thon on April 18 raised over $6,000 with nearly 200 families participating. Innovations Academy and TDHS reported field trips, AP mock exams, and spring events including prom preparations and scholarship ceremonies. Directors and principals commended the students and community partners for their involvement.
These presentations provided the board with a cross-section of extracurricular, academic and community engagement across district schools.
