TDHS student leaders asked the school board on April 24 to reinstate a mandatory $30 Associated Student Body (ASB) fee to replenish activity funds and preserve events and club support.
ASB leaders told the board that when the fee was mandatory in 2019-20 it generated $20,550 from 686 students; since becoming voluntary, sticker sales produced $4,235 from 121 students in the current year. The ASB said reduced revenue nearly forced cancellation of recent student events and that a restored fee would provide free access to home events for students, lower ticket prices for dances and help fund clubs and outreach activities. The students said fee waivers and counseling-office assistance would be used to ensure equity for families with demonstrated need.
Board members praised the students' data-driven presentation but emphasized the need for broader student-body input before changing policy. Superintendent Bernal recommended a follow-up meeting with high school leadership and ASB officers to determine next steps and to consider a schoolwide survey to gauge student and family support.
