Polk County endorses regional letter warning state about utility tax appeals

County Administrator (staff) told the Polk County Board that several counties had circulated a regional letter asking the state to address repeated tax-court appeals by large utilities, including Enbridge. "If the judgment goes in their favor, the counties are the ones that have to pay the, refund," the County Administrator said, describing the potential fiscal impact on rural counties.
Commissioners discussed the decades-long process by which utility valuations are set at the state level and appealed in tax court. The administrator noted the legislature previously stepped in to provide counties with funds for an earlier settlement but said no new legislative or administrative fix has been enacted. Committee member (speaker 4) moved to endorse the letter; another commissioner seconded and the motion carried with the board approving endorsement.
Board members emphasized outreach: the administrator said the letter could be published in local newspapers and in the county newsletter to inform townships, school districts and other taxing entities that could be affected.
