Northern Township asks to buy smaller parcel for wastewater treatment; county retains land that could enable housing

Administrator Barry updated the board on ongoing negotiations with Northern Township over county land for a wastewater treatment facility. The township has asked to amend an earlier purchase-and-sale to acquire a smaller, roughly 26-acre parcel on the west side of the trail rather than the larger parcel previously discussed; that change would allow the county to retain about 56 acres on the east side for other uses.
Barry said the modification benefits the county by preserving more developable land on the east parcel and retains a potential connectivity advantage: the retained parcel would have access options that could support future housing. He noted that modeling shows a potential range of development sizes — "it could be anywhere from a 150 to maybe 225 units, possibly" — while stressing that those figures are modeled potentials, not commitments. The township was reviewing the amendment and staff expected to bring a proposed amendment before the board once the township advances its approval process. No sale was finalized at the work session.
