District's CTE director: Ag Barn delay would require daily transportation and affect 750 students

Kathleen Petroff, Royce City ISD's director of Career and Technical Education, briefed trustees on how a phased construction plan would affect Ag Barn classes and related programming.
"We have over 750 students currently participating," Petroff said, explaining that many core Ag courses require hands-on animal access and cannot simply be moved off-site without transportation and schedule changes. She said under some phasing options the district would need to shuttle underclassmen to the existing Ag Barn for lab periods during the day and that animal care schedules (feeding, cleaning and biosecurity) complicate sharing arrangements.
Petroff added that Ag programs also carry equipment and animal-cost considerations; some animals and classes are costly and families are already invested in program materials. District staff said they would include program logistics, transportation costs and student access in the scenario analysis the board requested.
