Board hears report on Robert Frost truss damage and discusses bond-driven facilities plan

Superintendent Kim Kellison reported to the Silver Falls School District 4J board that inspectors found issues with five roof trusses above the Robert Frost kitchen and functional skills classroom and that engineers and contractors responded the same day to brace the structure. "The engineer is not certain what caused the damage, but they did look at every truss in the building," Kellison said; she added that Brockamp and Jaeger were onsite that day to begin bracing and that the building has since been cleared for students and staff.
Kellison told the board the district needs an updated Long Range Facilities Plan before pursuing a bond and said only two firms submitted proposals to guide the process; BRIX was selected with an estimated cost in the range of $85,000to100,000. She said the district received a $50,000 donation to offset the cost with one caveat: if the district goes out for a bond it must provide an artists rendering of the projects proposed. Board members asked clarifying questions about the incident, the scope of the consultant work, grant eligibility, and what material could be released given personnel-related operational constraints.
Director Wally Lierman requested a formal report on the Robert Frost incident be added to a future agenda; Superintendent Kellison said she would determine what could be released because the matter involves personnel. The board also agreed to hold facility-focused work sessions and building tours in January and February to show conditions at Robert Frost, Mark Twain and other schools as part of the Long Range Facilities Plan process.
