Mishawaka board approves student fees for 2026–27 to secure state reimbursement

The School City of Mishawaka board on Aug. 5 approved proposed student fees for the 2026–27 school year so the district can claim state reimbursement for eligible materials.
Dr. Saxtel explained that, under Indiana law, public schools must provide textbooks and other curriculum materials at no cost and that fee schedules submitted to the state enable reimbursement for eligible supplemental materials. He said fees were calculated by determining per‑student cost from each vendor and then aggregating by grade level or course. The district presented a fee schedule for the upcoming year and the board approved it by voice vote.
Board members asked whether the fees changed from the prior year; Dr. Saxtel said they were "very similar" and that the district tries to save where possible while still providing necessary materials.
