The School City of Mishawaka Board of School Trustees on Aug. 5 approved a preliminary determination and reimbursement resolution to enable issuance of general‑obligation bond series 2026.
Administration explained the bond proceeds would finance planned facility and land improvements, specifically citing roof replacements at John Young Middle School and Mishawaka High School. The resolution, presented by district business staff, establishes the corporation’s intent to reimburse eligible project expenditures from future bond proceeds and authorizes next steps in the bond issuance process.
During the public hearing on the consolidated additional appropriation, resident David Straughn told the board he opposed issuing “one or more series of the general obligation bonds in the original aggregate principal amount not to exceed $7,150,000,” saying the background statement lacked sufficient supporting detail and a current, prioritized capital plan. The board closed the public hearing and, after the administration’s presentation, approved the resolution by voice vote.
Board members and administrators said the resolution is an administrative step to allow financing and that each individual project funded by the bonds will return to the board for final approval. No specific bond sale date or underwriting terms were presented at the meeting.
