At its Jan. 5, 2026, meeting the Cairo Board of Directors voted to condemn a residence at 202 W Martin Street and to prepare a condemnation letter the homeowner can submit to insurance. Trustee Phil Bowden moved to condemn the property; Chairman Vanessa Joseph seconded the motion. The board recorded the motion as passing with Bowden, Joseph, Megan Brumley and Tell Alexander voting in favor; Trustee Chris Zike recused himself.
Homeowner Timothy Zike told the board the mold problem at 202 W Martin Street developed after the HVAC system “not working properly in 2023,” which he said is what caused the issue and why he needs a condemnation letter for his insurer. The board also voted to hire Jose Caldera to consult and possibly represent the village if the matter goes to court; the motion to hire Caldera passed unanimously.
