The borough’s Office of Emergency Management briefed the council on event planning for the World Cup, Memorial Day parade and other large events and recommended shortening the Memorial Day parade route to improve traffic control and reduce the risk of a vehicle intrusion. OEM described the alternate route as shorter and more manageable for traffic control.
Council members expressed mixed views. Some supported OEM’s safety-first recommendation, noting fewer intersections to secure; others said the shorter route would be "anticlimactic" and asked whether additional safety measures (barriers, staged heavy equipment, or more officers) could preserve parade length. Council asked OEM to return with a concrete plan B and to present safety alternatives at the next meeting before taking final action.
