Salt Creek project gets targeted funding for sediment and mercury reduction

Beth Teal, a resource conservationist with the district, described ongoing water-quality monitoring in the Salt Creek Watershed and the district’s Focused Ag Solutions work to reduce sediment and address mercury concerns. Teal said monitoring sites—from Brown Road to near Whiteson—focus on total suspended solids (TSS) and summer temperatures, and that several sites exceed biological temperature thresholds. "You don't wanna go above that," Teal said of the 18 degrees Celsius threshold for aquatic life.
Teal summarized the district’s outreach with landowners and ranked conservation practices (riparian buffers, forested riparian areas, field borders) to guide project selection. She said the district has "about $92,000" to contract projects over the next year under the Salt Creek Focused Ag Solutions funding and expected two initial applications to move forward; ODA will do a final watershed review in 2028.
