Council approves five Valley Junction murals in Microsoft partnership

The West Des Moines City Council voted unanimously on Aug. 3 to approve a Level 1 site‑plan modification and license agreements to install five wall murals in Valley Junction, a project funded through a partnership among Bravo, Microsoft and the Historic Valley Junction Foundation.
Sarah Hansen, senior community affairs manager for Microsoft, described the murals as an effort to "celebrate and preserve the area's unique history" and said the company was honored to support the project. Historic Valley Junction Foundation Executive Director Steve Freibert thanked the city and volunteers, noting the project has been a year in the making and that the foundation had updated its insurance certificate to meet city requirements. Freibert told the council, "This has been an awesome partnership... can't wait to see these things when they're done."
Council members asked about construction staging and public access during installation; staff said staging permits and coordination with the public arts advisory commission were conditions of approval. The council approved the resolution and the necessary license agreements, and the foundation plans an unveiling celebration during October Nights.
