The Old Tappan mayor and council adopted ordinance 12-50-24, an amendment to the borough’s LOSAP (Length of Service Award Program) for the fire department, on second and final reading.
The ordinance was introduced earlier and read into the record; council then moved to adopt. During the roll call, one council member stated, "I'm a fireman, so I'm gonna abstain," and another member likewise announced an abstention. The clerk completed the roll call and the ordinance was adopted; the borough clerk was directed to publish the notice of adoption as required by law.
Council did not engage in further debate during the adoption vote. The abstentions were recorded on the record and attributed to council members who indicated they are firefighters or have direct service ties to the department.
