The Rye Conservation Commission voted unanimously on March 12 to authorize up to $3,000 to build prototype swallow shelters and install them at locations shown on the Commission's plan. Secretary/Clerk Hugh Lee described two concepts: a 6x6 cubby-style shelter with four entry paths, and a small raised mini-barn set about 4 feet above ground to encourage under-structure entry. Lee said the proposed locations are outside wetland buffers, with the nearest shelter about "approximately 100 ft. to the north of the western edge of the barn" to keep installations out of regulated buffer zones.
Commissioners emphasized that the vote was limited to building the prototypes and siting them as shown on the attached plan and did not itself reopen the barn. Vice-Chair Mike Garvan requested the shelter plans be posted on the town website for public review. The Commission also asked that shelters be installed before the April nesting season if possible.
