District presents KISA needs-assessment and two-pronged plan to board

Dr. Desoto presented an overview of the district's needs-assessment and Kansas Educational Systems Accreditation (KISA) process and described a two-part rollout: district-level focus areas followed by school-based blueprints.
"So when we think about continuous improvement in Auburn Washburn, there are 3 pillars that we always try to lean on," Dr. Desoto said, noting the district guiding coalition includes 23 members, of which 15 are teachers. He emphasized alignment between state, district and building plans and said teams will submit the KISA action plan for state approval and then implement it in schools.
Desoto said the district is emphasizing two goals this cycle: building tiered systems of support (response to intervention) and reaffirming high-quality instructional strategies. He described the first goal as focusing on what response to intervention should look like at the building level; the second is about ensuring teachers have effective instructional strategies and professional learning to use them.
Board members asked whether KISA steps continue beyond the current year. Desoto said the core system is stabilizing but the state is continuing to refine data metrics and that the district expects to add layers of data monitoring over time. He said check-ins with state implementation specialists occur in October and April and that the district will present building-level blueprints and data walk-throughs at a future meeting.
