At its Feb. 18 caucus meeting, the West Long Branch Mayor and Council reviewed departmental budgets and identified several items for closer scrutiny. Councilman Bray opened the discussion; Councilman Gomez said one fire-department budget item "require[d] further explanation from the Chiefs," and noted that emergency medical services spending was ‘‘essentially flat’’ with only minor line-item reallocations based on last year’s actuals.
Councilwoman Ruane credited Recreation Director Debbie with efforts to trim the department's spending but said a notable increase in the community-recreation line item reflected accounting changes rather than new programs. Debbie explained the jump was "due to costs previously misclassified under other categories now being correctly charged to community rec." The council did not adopt budget changes at caucus but identified follow-up items for staff and the relevant department heads.
