Superintendent outlines potential trust-land transfer at Bear Springs and revenue options

Superintendent Diana Young summarized a recent Revenue Advisory Committee meeting about a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) trust-land transfer at Bear Springs that could remove timber land from the district’s junior taxing district and therefore reduce future timber revenue.
Young explained that, before the sale is finalized, the district can send a letter to the Clallam County commissioners asking them to forward a request to DNR to consider payment (or identify replacement land), but she cautioned that the state does not have to provide payment. "Once this goes away from us, then it's no longer in our junior taxing district," she said, and the advisory committee will monitor DNR’s mapping and the transfer process.
Board members discussed timing and transparency; Young said a DNR representative will be asked to appear to explain the process (acres versus dollar-for-dollar exchanges) and she offered to draft a letter for the board’s approval if they want to pursue compensation.
