Board tables middle-school social-studies curriculum adoption to August meeting for review

District staff presented a recommendation to adopt updated middle-school social-studies materials (McGraw Hill) after a year of teacher pilot work. Staff said the new materials provide more critical-thinking prompts, stronger writing integration and improved indigenous-perspective resources fulfilling Washington's "since time immemorial" requirement. Teachers recommend a 5th-grade core text with supplemental 6th–8th resources.
Several board members asked for more time to review physical and digital samples before voting. The board agreed to table the adoption until the August 11 meeting so members can examine teacher guides and sample lessons and return with questions. Staff said they would bring class-set pricing and logistics to the August meeting.
