Board discusses expanding role for ex officio student board members

Under new business, Miss Jackman described takeaways from a summer law and leadership conference that emphasized elevating student voices and preparing students for governance roles. She said the district has printed a student toolkit and a student handbook draft, and recommended mentoring and pre-meeting preparation so student members are substantive participants rather than placeholders.
"The goal here, ultimately, is to get people to run for school and to get people to run for office and participate and vote," Miss Jackman said, urging the board to use mentoring and clear expectations. Board members discussed whether student participation should be voluntary and how scheduling and frequency of meetings affect student availability; members suggested mentoring by a principal or a board member and clearer written expectations in policy.
No policy vote was taken; members agreed to take time to plot a course, involve administrators in planning and return with proposed timelines and materials.
