Board approves Central Washington University dual-credit partnership and course additions
Summary
The board approved a College in the High School partnership with Central Washington University to expand dual-credit offerings; staff said students could earn the equivalent of about half a bachelor's degree credit load if they follow the program from 9th grade.
The Quillayute Valley School District approved a partnership with Central Washington University to offer College in the High School courses that will allow students to earn transferable college credit in high-school classes. Brenda, the district presenter, said the program would open pathways for students to leave high school "halfway finished with their bachelor's degree by the time they graduate" if they follow the articulated course plan beginning in ninth grade.
Brenda described the approved course catalog additions (English 101/102 equivalents, introductory humanities and other courses), said coursework will transfer to public four-year universities in Washington and that there will be no textbook or lab fees under the agreement. The board approved the partnership and the course-catalog amendment by voice vote and asked staff to continue aligning teacher coursework with CWU requirements. The district also indicated a follow-up amendment will be brought for approval to include a CTE culinary-arts articulation.
Implementation notes: staff will submit course articulations to CWU, order class sets where appropriate, and schedule the courses so students can begin earning college credit in the next school year.
