Deputy Fire Chief Scott Mohr briefed the Board on the Fire Department’s ongoing review of hiring practices and said the Department is researching agencies that use rotating eligibility lists. Mohr said one option under consideration is an online system that updates eligibility every 180 days to keep candidate pools current.
During discussion, the Commission agreed the department continues to maintain an initial eligibility list for firefighter candidates. City Attorney Melissa Wolf committed to revising the draft Rules and Regulations to make any changes or exceptions for the Fire Department explicit so that the initial eligibility list practice is preserved or appropriately adapted.
The Fire Department also reported that one firefighter candidate is currently undergoing a background investigation; prior candidates had produced one-time passes or withdrawals from lists.
