Wink-Loving ISD cancels May trustee election after uncontested filings

The Wink-Loving ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a motion on March 20 to cancel the May 2025 trustee election because the number of candidates equaled the number of positions up for election and all three candidates filed unopposed.
The agenda item explained that at-large elections may be canceled if the number of candidates is the same or fewer than positions available; the Texas Election Code requires the board to issue Certificates of Election to unopposed candidates after Election Day and sworn-in procedures follow as with elected candidates. Trustee Carrie Purcell moved the board cancel the election because Places 1, 2 and 3 (Clayton Hawkins, Chad Evans and Melissa Halterman) were unopposed; Trustee Jerome Dewberry seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The minutes record the board's adherence to the Texas Election Code but do not include the actual Certificates of Election or the dates for swearing-in; administrative staff will follow statutory procedures for issuing certificates and completing the election cancellation process.
